UNDERSTANDING THE TWELVE (12) BHAVAS / HOUSES

To understand the concept of bhavas/houses in astrology, it is very important to understand about the life cycle of an individual.  With the below illustration it will be easy to understand the same. Although everyone is familiar with this but still it’s always good to brush it again!.

The houses or bhavas are the portions of the sky as we see them rising in the east, setting in the west, above our head and in between. The birth chart is divided into twelve (12) bhavas/houses. The first and most important house is that portion of the sky that is rising in the East at the time of birth, also called the 1st house.

**PLEASE NOTE THAT IN NAADI ASTROLOGY THE IMPORTANCE IS NOT GIVEN TO LAGNA BUT TO THE PLACEMENT OF JUPITER AT THE TIME OF BIRTH. THEREFORE THE 1ST HOUSE WILL BE WHERE JUPITER IS PLACED.**

These bhavas/houses represent the various areas of our lives such as our family (2nd house), our siblings (3rd house), and profession (10th house). Each bhava represents a number of areas of life.
The logic of how and why each of the 12 bhavas/houses has been assigned its significations has four major parts: life chronology correspondence (as explained above in the illustration), physical correspondence, Rasi/sign correspondence, the directions and relative counting. The 4 correspondence principles provide the foundation significations, whereas the relative counting principle extends the list to an almost limitless array of significations.
Let us discuss this in a more detailed way and explanation:

1. NUMBERING THE BHAVAS/HOUSES
The bhavas or houses are numbered either in anti-clockwise direction or clockwise direction. This entirely depends upon the type of chart you are using. The types of charts used are either North Indian (Widely Used), South Indian, Bengali, Circular and others. For the purpose of this article let us use the North Indian and South Indian charts. This will make you familiar with charts for future purposes.

NORTH INDIAN (ANTI-CLOCKWISE)

  SOUTH INDIAN (CLOCKWISE)

2. LIFE CHRONOLOGY CORRESPONDENCE
In the case of life chronology correspondence, the full span of life is mapped to the chart. The 12 houses correspond to various stages in life.
·         1st bhava/house: Known as Ascendant, it corresponds to birth itself and to our self.
·         2nd bhava/house: It denotes early childhood, our family and how we speak.
·         3rd bhava/house: It primarily denotes our siblings, courage, communications what we use to interact with the world.
·         4th bhava/house: Our home is the place where we stay and the most relaxing area in our life. We start getting educated here.
·         5th bhava/house: We then move towards our higher studies and use our mind to achieve success in life. We fall in love and develop relations.
·         6th bhava/house: As we move in life we are bound to have illness and enemies. This house represents the two.
·         7th bhava/house: We get married and have our status raised in the society.
·         8th bhava/house: After marriage there are lot of transformations which we go through and this house makes these happen.
·         9th bhava/house: We go for religious or spiritual journeys, sometimes across the globe for our long journeys.
·         10th bhava/house: Everyone wants a raise in the job/business. The karma and rise in professional sphere is correspondent to this house.
·         11th bhava/house: How much we earn depends upon how much we work. The gains are considered from here, for the work done.
·         12th bhava/house: Death is inevitable, and this where it all ends. The house/bhava is connected to our journey towards liberation.

3. PHYSICAL CORRESPONDENCE
In the case of physical correspondence, the full body is mapped to the birth chart. We commonly refer it to as the kaalpurusha kundali. Below are the parts of the body associated with the kaalpurusha birth chart:
·         1st bhava/house: Head
·         2nd bhava/house: Face and Throat
·         3rd bhava/house: Arms and Shoulders

·         9th bhava/house: Thighs
·         10th bhava/house: Knees
·         11th bhava/house: Calf Muscles.
·         12th bhava/house: Feet.

4. RASI/SIGN CORRESPONDENCE
Each house is correspondent to a sign which rules that house when tenanted there. The kaalpurusha kundali referred above always begins with the sign of Aries and therefore the below are just for example purpose taking kaalpurusha kundali as an example. In the South Indian chart these are always fixed and do not change, however, in the North Indian chart it will depend upon the rising sign or ascendant.

·         2nd bhava/house: TAURUS
·         3rd bhava/house: GEMINI

·         12th bhava/house: PICES

5. DIRECTION CORRESPONDENCE
Each house corresponds to directions which are useful in determining the location of the street, house, direction from where the spouse could come from and in many cases the travel direction.
·          1st bhava/house: EAST
·         2nd bhava/house: SOUTH
·         3rd bhava/house: WEST
